📖 Did You Know? Bolivar Peninsula
🌍 The Name
Named after Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), the famous South American liberator — likely by pirate-turned-privateer Louis Michel Aury, who sailed under Bolívar's commission.
🏹 Native People
The Atakapas and Orcoquisas peoples lived here long before European settlers arrived. A burial ground near Caplen has yielded flint artifacts estimated to be centuries old.
☠️ Pirates & Smugglers
Jean Laffite and Louis-Michel Aury used Bolivar Peninsula as a base for their pirate kingdom around Galveston Bay. The peninsula was also part of an overland smuggling route between Louisiana and Galveston.
👩 Jane Long — "Mother of Texas"
In 1821, Jane Long was left nearly alone at Fort Las Casas with dwindling food and only a rusty cannon. With no flag, she raised her red flannel petticoat up the flagpole each morning to fool the natives into thinking the fort was still occupied.
🍉 Watermelon Capital
From the late 1800s through early 1900s, the peninsula was known as both the "Breadbasket of Galveston" and the "Watermelon Capital of Texas." Cowboys still run cattle on its salt grass pastures today.
🚂 Railroad & Tourism
The Gulf & Interstate Railroad in the late 1800s connected the peninsula to the rest of Texas, sparking a tourism boom. Seaside resorts and vacation homes followed, and it became a beloved Gulf Coast escape.
🌊 Hurricane Ike (2008)
One of the most destructive storms in Texas history, Hurricane Ike made landfall on September 13, 2008 and nearly wiped out Crystal Beach. The community has since rebuilt and is thriving again — which is where we're staying!
🐦 Birdwatcher's Paradise
The Houston Audubon Society is one of the largest landowners on the peninsula today. Bolivar has world-renowned bird sanctuaries and is considered one of the top birdwatching destinations in the entire world.
